Loosely based on Grimm’s Snow White, Snow Spell (a novel in prose poems) recounts the tale of a poverty-stricken young teen living in Paris and completely unaware of her magical powers. Only when she starts seeing gorgeous ghosts floating on her family’s cracked apartment walls, does Neve suspect she may not be quite normal. But will her talents as a witch prove strong enough to protect her from her stepmother’s desire to see her dead and buried or will a cute but evil warlock be the cause of her downfall?
My Review:
Wow! I'm blown away with the mere uniqueness of this book. It is so different from anything I've ever read and I thoroughly enjoyed it a whole lot!
As you may already know from the summary, this is a retelling of Snow White. It is told in prose poems, from alternating points of views. The bulk of the story takes place in Paris and surrounds the lives of Neve our "Snow White", her adoptive parents and of course the evil stepmother, Rosa. Now Rosa happens to be a powerful and angry witch, who is dead set on destroying Neve in an attempt to keep her husbands love only for herself. Her plan, involves a very good looking warlock and some strawberries!
This book hooked me from the very beginning and wouldn't let go until long after I had read the last words. The plot, I thought was amazing. It was so well thought out and really interesting. I really enjoyed the magical aspect of the story. The pacing was great as well.
Something else that I really enjoyed, was the format of this book. I haven't read many books told in prose poems and after reading Snow Spell I can't wait to check out more! Sonia's writing I thought was very intricate and magical. There was a lot of imagery through out the book and it really helped me visualize the story.
Overall, I think that Snow Spell is a great new retelling of Snow White. For those who are looking for a nice, quick fairy tale read then look no farther!
