Book Review: Between Shades of Gray

Between Shades of GrayBetween Shades of Gray - Ruta Sepetys
Release Date: March 22, 2011
Publisher: Philomel
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 344
Buy the Book: Amazon

Lina is just like any other fifteen-year-old Lithuanian girl in 1941. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on boys. Until one night when Soviet officers barge into her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life they've known. Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia. Here they are forced, under Stalin's orders, to dig for beets and fight for their lives under the cruelest of conditions.
Lina finds solace in her art, meticulously - and at great risk - documenting events by drawing, hoping these messages will make their way to her father's prison camp to let him know they are still alive. It is a long and harrowing journey, spanning years and covering 6,500 miles, but it is through incredible strength, love, and hope that Lina ultimately survives.Between Shades of Gray is a novel that will steal your breath and capture your heart.
Summary taken from Goodreads.
My Review:
It's 1941, Hitler and Stalin have signed a pact of non-aggression therefore giving the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to Stalin and the Soviet Union. After annexing the three countries to the Soviet Union. Stalin drafted lists of people whom he felt were anti-Soviet. These lists were composed of educated and knowledgeable people such as professors, doctors, librarians etc. Once the lists were made, these people were brutally taken away from their home, separated into two groups. One of able-bodied men and the other of women, children and elderly. They were packed into cattle cars and the men were taken to prisons while the others were taken to Siberia to work in labour camps.

The story begins with us being introduced to our fifteen year old protagonist, Lina Vilkas. She is an aspiring artist from Lithuania with a bright future ahead of her. Until one night her father doesn't come home and one knock on the door turns her whole life upside down. She, her mother and her little brother Jonas are taken from their nice home in Kaunas, Lithuania and packed onto cattle car labelled Thieves and Prostitutes. From there starts their journey all the way to the North Pole. Along the way Lina and her family meet other deportees and create a community within themselves.

Between Shades of Gray is an amazing and unforgettable novel. Its every page was full of pain, suffering yet there was always that shade of love, shining though. It is a tale of survival, courage and belief in what is right. During a time where all else seems to be lost, the characters in this book continue to strive to survive and show goodness in spite of their terrible situations and conditions.

I truly loved all of characters in this novel. They were so well developed and realistic. Their circumstances were all so carefully and well discribed in the book that you can't help but feel like you know these people.

I really enjoyed reading from Lina's point of view. She was a very strong and goodhearted character. Her love for her family, her country and her countrymen is incredible. Despite all the problems she faces, her will to survive is truly inspirational and I think that through her drawings she inspired people to live.

Lina's love interest in this novel was Andrius Arvydas a son of a military official who is deported along with Lina and her family in the same cattle car. Andrius was an amazing and courageous character. His and his mothers situation touched me deeply and I truly sympathized with him.

There's also Lina's mother Elena and her little brother Jonas. I felt like Elena was not just a wonderful mother but an amazing woman in general. She believed in the good in people and put others well-being before her own. As for Jonas, I thought that he was a sweet young boy who was forced to grow up in the face of such terrors. I teared up every time Jonas stole a potato or something to help feed his mother and sister. A ten year old boy should not have to word to gain his food ration yet Jonas did so and never complain about it.

Lastly, there is Nikolai Kretzsky a young Soviet officer. I really liked reading about Nikolai he I thought was a very special character and I'm not going to say anything else.

Before reading this I had no idea of the horrors the people of the Batlics were subjected to. We all know of Hitler and his regime but never of the deportation of the Baltic people and the cruelties they faced. So in this book Ruta Sepetys brings to light a never before told tale. Also, what I think makes this book even more special is the fact that Ruta Sepetys' grandparents were survivors of the deportations. They actually immigrated to America in order to escape from the deportations.

In conclusion, Between Shades of gray is a magnificent book that deserves to be read by everybody. I had no problems with this book. It had a great balance of everything important needed to make such a wonderful and thought provoking book. Truly magnificent and a must read!

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy: The Graphic Novel, #1)Vampire Acedemy - Richelle Mead, Leigh Dragoon, Emma Vieceli

Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 144

The entire first Vampire Academy novel has been adapted for book one by Leigh Dragoon and overseen by Richelle Mead, while the beautiful art of acclaimed British illustrator Emma Vieceli brings the story to life.
Summary taken from Goodreads.
My Review:
As a die hard Vampire Academy fan, I have to say that I was truly over-joyed to be able to read the graphic novel! Extras like movies and graphic novels to a book series is always a risk. But I think the risk was worth taking as I actually really enjoyed reading this. I think all the authors did a wonderful job bringing this book and its amazing characters to life.

But before we delve more into the book, I have to warn readers that if they want to really enjoy this. They have to go into reading it with more of an open mind as it is a graphic novel and thus many scenes from the original novel were missing.

So this is actually quiet a small book. It is only 144 pages long and it took me only one sitting to finish it. But it was 144 pages of non-stop action! One of the main reasons why I loved the VA series so much was the action and I'm sure that, that is true for many others as well.

The only sort of problem I had with this book was its length as it didn't permit many things to be added to it. I really wished that more of the little scenes between Rose and Dimitri were featured in the book. But I can understand why it isn't there and even without them it is still pretty amazing!

I think that Emma Vieceli did fantastic job illustrating the book and bringing our favourite characters to life. Rose was just as spunky as I imagined her. Vieceli's illustrations of the characters, I thought were spot on. It really helped me enjoy the book so much more!

Overall, I think this a great graphic novel to read. It was short and sweet and made me want to go and re-read the series! So I recommend it to all Vampire Academy and graphic novel fans. This might also be a great book to help you stat reading graphic novels. I believe that the whole series, so all six of the book will be made into graphic novels. So look out for that!

This is a brave and unflinching novel from the bestselling author ofBefore I Die. It's a book about loyalty and the choices that come with it. But above all, it's a book about love.
Summary taken from Goodreads.
My Review:
Wow, now that was an epic ride! So I read Jenny Downham's debut novel, Before I Die about three years ago and I was stunned. It was so raw with emotions and feelings, I found it completely amazing. Therefore I was obviously super excited to get my hands on this book. There are so many reason why I have been waiting to read this book so impatiently. One of which is the super hype around it! I watched and read many reviews by European based bloggers and vloggers and they just gushed about it! Also the summary is quiet intriguing.

Alright so lets talk about the story. As you may know, You Against Me is set in Britain and it surrounds the lives of  Mickey and Ellie and their two families, who are from completely different classes of the British society. There is the Mackenzie family, they are lower class. The mother is on social assistance and she is an alcoholic. This means that Mickey our male lead is playing the adults role for his two sisters and mother. Then there is the Parker family. They are a more privileged family and stable family.

But after a night of partying gone wrong. Mickey's younger sister, Karyn claims that Ellie's 18 year old brother, Tom Parker has raped her. But the only witness that night was Ellie and she says that she was asleep and didn't see anything. The book starts out with Tom being let out of jail on bail and a very angry Mickey. Mickey feels that it is his responsibility as the brother of Karyn to get Tom back for what he did to his sister. So with this in mind, Mickey decides to go over to Tom's house and basically beat him up. But what Mickey finds at the Parker home is not Tom but his sister Ellie.

Lets talk about the characters. I found that the character in this novel were fantastic! Jenny Downham created such realistic and strong characters. I really loved Ellie. She was so smart yet sweet and innocent. All she really wanted was her older brother back. She also has many moments where she was really daring, spunky and out there. I found her to be really relatable aswell. I understood why she did what she did. Her character really made me question myself and ask myself what I would do if I were put in her situation. Then there is Mickey. I truly loved Mickey, he is that wonderful older brother that I never had. Mickey loves his family, even if his mother is always drunk and he has to be the adult. I think he is the link that really keeps his family afloat. Mickey is an aspiring chef. I really enjoyed the little scenes with him at the pub, cooking. I found it really interesting as I myself am quiet hopeless when it comes to cooking! Overall I found the two main characters to be completely amazing!

There are also many side characters and minor characters in this novel. There is Tom, Karyn, Mickey's best friend Jacko.  I thought they were all great characters. Realistic and understandable in their own ways. Non of them struck me as stereotypical. Jenny Downham made sure that all of her characters were very well developed. I couldn't hate any of them despite some of their actions. Tom, I thought was a confused and misunderstood character. While Karyn ended up being stronger than everyone gave her credit for. I really loved Jacko too. He was a very loyal best friend not just to Mickey but to his whole family.

The plot in this story I thought was fast paced and full of action. There were revelations at every twist and turn which really keeps a reader guessing and wanting more. Just like in her first novel, I devoured Jenny's writing. She has such a simple yet beautiful writing style. I think it really made the book even more enjoyable!

In conclusion, You Against me was a phenomenal book. I loved everything about it from the plot to the characters and everything else in between. The cover is amazing I think that it actually represents the book very well. The scratches add to the mystery. There isn't much else I could say about this book. You really have to read it to see how exceptional it really is!

More on Jenny Downhams debut novel, Before I Die:

Before I DieBefore I Die - Jenny Downham
Release Date: September 25, 2007
Publisher: David Fickling Books
Age Group: Young Adult
This beautifully crafted, eloquent novel transforms what at first seems a depressing topic (a teenager dying from leukemia) into a life-affirming, uplifting portrait of a young woman determined to live her life as fully as she can in the short time that she has left. As the heroine, 16-year-old Tessa, sets out to complete a list of things she yearns to experience before dying, her actions are genuine, her emotions raw and powerful. She's a character teens can relate to, though her situation is one most of us can't fathom. This novel brilliantly addresses the subject of death with love, anger, humor, and honesty, and, through the experiences of its brave heroine, relates a powerful message that will resonate with readers.

In My Mailbox (5)

Welcome to this weeks IMM!
In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi from The Story Siren.

This week I got:

Carrie - Stephen King (Amazon/Goodreads)
Carrie

A modern classic, Carrie introduced a distinctive new voice in American fiction -- Stephen King. The story of misunderstood high school girl Carrie White, her extraordinary telekinetic powers, and her violent rampage of revenge, remains one of the most barrier-breaking and shocking novels of all time.
Make a date with terror and live the nightmare that is...Carrie.

You Against Me - Jenny Downham (Amazon/Goodreads)
You Against Me

I'm so excited to finally be able to read these books! Carrie is actually one of Stephen Kings first books and it sounds just perfect for the month of October. I'm not much of a horror buff but I'm looking forward to reading more by Stephen King! As for You Against Me. I cannot believe that I actually have this book and am reading it. I've been waiting for it to release in North America since last year when I watch a few reviews by European YouTube book vloggers! I also read her debut novel Before I Die which was am amazing book therefore I have very high expectations for this one and so far I'm really happy with how the book is going!
 SO EXCITED!!!

THAT'S ALL FROM ME!

Wrap Up- September

Welcome everyone to my September Wrap Up post. This will be a new type of post that I will be doing in the end of every month to summarize all the books that I read in the month and give a few thoughts on them. I know that Misty at the Book Rat and Carla at the Library Mosaic also do something similar to this. So go and check them out!
Now to make this a little more creative and give it my own touch. I'm going to have book battles. So basically If I read more than one book in a certain genre I will put them up against each other and may the best book win!! I will also have a favourites section.
So I hope you enjoy this!

To start off, September has been a bit of a slow month for me with school starting and all. But I have still managed to read some great books! If you would like to see my review of the books, there will be a link on the title of each book.

Books Read In September:
Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy: The Graphic Novel, #1)
Chain Reaction - Simone Elkeles (Amazon/Goodreads)
XVI - Julia Karr (Amazon/Goodreads)
Where She Went - Gayle Forman (Amazon/ Goodreads)
Moonglass - Jessi Kirby (Amazon/Goodreads)
Bloodlines - Richelle Mead (Amazon/Goodreads)
Blood Red Road - Moira young (Amazon/Goodreads)
Vampire Academy Graphic Novel - Richelle Mead, Leigh Dragoon, Emma Vieceli (Amazon/Goodreads)

Book Battle:

Contemporary Realistic Fiction:
Chain Reaction (Perfect Chemistry, #3)VS.Where She Went (If I Stay, #2)VS.Moonglass
WINNER: Chain Reaction
Alright, so this was one of the hardest pair-ups especially because I completely love all three of these books. How could someone not love Chain Reaction. Especially with not one but three gorgeous Fuentes brothers! The whole Perfect Chemistry Trilogy has become one of my all time favourites. But Where She Went and Moonglass were not far behind as they were both fantastic. These two were more focused on grief, life and death with some romance. After reading them Gayle Forman has become one of my favourite authors while Jessi Kirby's debut novel has me waiting for more amazing things from her!

Dystopian Fiction:
XVI (XVI, #1)VS.Blood Red Road (Dustlands, #1)
WINNER: Blood Red Road
Both these books were amazing! As with many others the dystopian genre is quickly becoming my favourite. Somethings that I loved about both of these books was the very intricate world and society that they authors created. In XVI, it was a society that is basically being ruled by media while in Blood Red Road its pretty much post-apocalyptic setting in which the world has turned into a desert and what's left of the people have either ran to isolation or become addicts and crooks. Although I enjoyed both books emensly. There was just something special about Blood Red Road. The main character was strong, world was amazing and not to mention the plot!

Favourites:

Book Title: Moonglass. I really like this title not just because its unique but also because it has a lot to do with the book. It actually tells us a lot about the book which I look for in a title.

Book Cover: This one was another hard choice as I am a total cover fanatic! But their has to be a favourite and for this month it is Blood Red Road also because the cover tells a lot about the book. You really see the how world looks in the book through the cover and I really like that.

Female Character: My favourite female character will have to go to Blood Red Road. I found Saba to be very strong both physically and mentally. I like how she developed as a character as well. She really reminds me of Katniss from the Hunger Games.

Male Character: My favourite male character is Adam from Where She Went. Gosh, did I love Adam or what! He was just amazing, mind blowing etc etc. I am so glad Gayle Forman decided to write Where She Went in Adams point of view. It really brought the story to life! Adam was such a real, and sweet character. I felt for him and understood him to a point that I was starting to reflect his feeling.

Side Character: This one is definitely Alex and Carlos in Chain Reaction. I love both of these guys unconditionally and I devoured their books. So I was really happy to get to read about them again in Chain Reaction. I loved the brother moments and the little looks we got of their lives after Perfect Chemsitry and Rules of Attraction. I think it just made the book and them even more memorable! Oh and the amazing dialogue from both of them was just priceless

Plot: Bloodlines! I love Richelle Meads books and her plots are amazing. They always keep you guessing and biting your nails wondering whats going to happen. Bloodlines was nothing less, it was full of twist and turns and plain awesomeness in every corner! Not to mention the crazy cliffhanger!

Ending: This one also has to go to Chain Reaction. The ending was just phenomenal as expected from Simone Elkeles. I'm really happy with how Chain Reaction brought a fantastic end deserving of such a wonderful series!

Quotes:

Chain Reaction:
- “Alex and Carlos—the tag team from hell. They’re the last people I need shit from right now. If they decide to trail me, too, I’ll have an entire entourage.
“I’m fine.”
“Then sit up and talk to us.”
“Okay, in that case I’m not fine. Go away.” I moan. “Unless you want me to puke all over you.” - Luis
XVI:
-"This moment of silence has been brought to you by the Resistance. In quietness, people can think for themselves." - Resistance

Where She Went:
- "You don't share me. You own me." - Adam
- "Hate me.
Devaste me.
Annihilate me.
Re-create me.
Re-create me.
Won't you, won't you re-create me." - Collateral Damage
- "But I'd do it again. I know that now. I'd make that promise a thousand times over and lose her a thousand times over to have heard her play last night or to see her in the morning sunlight. Or even without that. Just to know that she's somewhere out there. Alive.” - Adam
Moonglass:
- “I read once that water is a symbol for emotions. And for a while now I've thought maybe my mother drowned in both.” - Anna
Bloodlines:
- “Yeah? Can you draw a skeleton riding a motorcycle with flames coming out of it? And I want a pirate hat on the skeleton. And a parrot on his shoulder. A skeleton parrot. Or maybe a ninja skeleton parrot? No, that would be overkill. But it'd be cool if the biker skeleton could be shooting some ninja throwing stars. That are on fire.” - Adrian
- “My God, Sage. Your eyes. How have I never noticed them?" That uncomfortable feeling was spreading over me again. "What about them?" "The color," he breathed. "When you stand in the light. They're amazing... like molten gold. I could paint those..." He reached toward me but then pulled back. "They're beautiful. You're beautiful.” - Adrian
-“Mmm. O positive, my favorite.”
“Is it? I thought it was a cabernet sauvignon.”
“So it is,” said Adrian, straight-faced. “My mistake.”  - Adrian
“Is it? I thought it was a cabernet sauvignon.” “So it is,” said Adrian, straight-faced. “My mistake.”  - Adrian
Blood Red Road:
- “Yer in my blood, Saba, he says. Yer in my head. Yer in my breath, yer in my bones...gawd help me, yer everywhere. You have bin since the first moment I set eyes on you.”
So whats you thoughts? What did you read this month?

I started this blog after following others for so long and am very glad I did as I am having a wonderful time talking and sharing my opinions on books here!
I hope that you continue to visit my blog and that my post will entertain you. I am looking forward to talking about books with you guys for many more months to come!
Thank you one again to everybody! And now I shall leave you with this yummy cake ^_^
